Tendonitis
Tendonitis - Definition
A tendon is a tough yet flexible band of rope like or
fibrous tissue. The tendon is the structure in your body
that connects your muscles to the bones. The structure
that transmits the force of the muscle contraction to the
bone is called a tendon. There are many tendons
throughout your body. The tendons in your fingers
and Achilles heel are two examples. When a tendon
becomes irritated, strained, or overused, tendonitis is
the result. The tendonitis is the direct
result of inflammation of the tendon. Chronic
tendonitis can weaken the tendon and lead to a subsequent
rupture.
Tendonitis: Treatment options
A combination of treatment options are available but
all should include rest and reduced use of the aggravated
tendon. Also, ice is frequently used along
with a combination of the options listed below.
Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
Aspirin, ibuprofen, and naproxen are commonly used to
treat initial symptoms of JRA. Additionally,
Doctors also have prescription forms of NSAID's which can
be effective.
Corticosteroids
Steroids like Prednisone or Cortisone are sometimes used to treat the
inflammation. Cortisone is injected into the area
of concern and the shot can sometimes be quite
painful. The side effect most common is a
'cortisone flare' where the injected cortisone crystallizes
and can cause a brief period of pain worse
than before the shot. This usually lasts a day or two and
is best treated by icing the injected area.
Alternative and Complimentary Therapy
The problem with most drugs is that they relieve the
pain but do nothing to help prevent the pain from
reoccurring. Many people are seeking out those
treatments which can help your condition. Two of
the most widely used supplements are glucosamine and
chondroitin. One of the most successful brand of
supplements containing these ingredients is called Free
and Easy for People. It contains quality amounts of chondroitin
and glucosamine along with many other ingredients such
as MSM and Ester-C. You carefully weigh the
benefits of all treatment options before deciding on a
course of action to treat your tendonitis.
