Bursitis
Bursitis: Background
Bursitis is inflammation of a bursa.  Bursae are closed, round, flattened sacs that are lined by synovium and separate bare areas of bone from overlapping muscles (deep bursae) or skin and tendons (superficial bursae).  In the normal state, the bursa provides a slippery surface that has almost no friction. A problem arises when a bursa becomes swollen and inflamed. The bursa loses its gliding capabilities, and becomes more and more irritated when it is moved.  Also, the smooth gliding bursa becomes gritty and rough.   The added bulk of the swollen bursa causes more friction within already confined spaces.  Movement of an inflamed bursa are painful and irritating.  They occur at areas of friction or possible impingement. The exact number of bursae in the body is variable; however, most people have approximately 160.  Bursitis is also known as a soft tissue rheumatic syndrome.

Bursitis: Diagnosis

The diagnosis of bursitis is largely made by obtaining a detailed history and conducting a complete physical examination. The following methods are used to accurately diagnose bursitis.  X-Rays, CAT scan, MRI, arthrogram, aspiration, and blood tests are the main tools used to diagnose bursitis.  Probably the most common method for diagnosis is when  tenderness directly over the bursa and pain with movement of the muscles and tendons that cross the bursa is demonstrated.

Bursitis: Treatment options

Treatment focuses on reducing pain and inflammation, as well as on preserving mobility and preventing disability and recurrence. Aseptic bursitis or non-infectious bursitis is treated with NSAIDS such as Motrin & Ibuprofen.  Also, anti-inflammatory drugs are used as well.  Septic bursitis or infected bursitis is treated with antibiotics and repeated aspiration of the infected fluid.   Recently, many people have been discovering the effectiveness of vitamin supplementation using Chondroitin, Glucosamine, MSM, & Ester-C.  One such product which has shown good results is Free and Easy for People.  Free and Easy for People relies on the synergistic effects of these vitamins to provide enhanced mobility and increased lubrication in the affected joint.
